I received my PhD in 1990 from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. I have been on the faculty here since then. My interests include business forecasting, objective setting in organizations, multimedia, and design.

Before starting my PhD I worked mainly in entrepreneurial ventures. My first job out of college was as an analyst for the Metropolitan Area Religious Coalition of Cincinnati, a public policy think tank, where I worked with church and civic leaders primarily to influence telecommunications and health policy. I was one of five during the earliest days of Thiel Audio, which has since become a leading manufacturer of high-end loudspeakers. In 1979, I founded Conceptual Instruments to develop The Desk Organizer. It created a new product category when it was published by Warner Software.

I have also worked at, and consulted with, some of the largest companies in the world, the federal government, and many universities, local governments, and non-profit organizations.

In 1998-99, I was a visiting scientist at IBM's Thomas J. Watson Research Laboratory, where I worked with the Computer Music Center on the design of interfaces for controlling sound and graphics in real-time. And last year, I was a visitor at Cornell’s Human Comuter Interaction lab.

May9th emails. For seven hours on May 9th of 2003, over ninety faculty, staff, and students were trapped in our offices as our building was taken over by a gunman. During the time, many of us communicated by email with one another and with relatives and friends ourside the building. My son, Peter, has collected together many of the emails from that day.
